Forest Protection

Procedures

The Unit of “Forest Health Information and Procedures” collects and elaborates data  from surveys and other studies from all fields of forest protection und supplies these information via a forest protection information portal and various print media. Further main emphases of the unit are testing and development of novel procedures and tools for pest management, as well as testing of pesticides for usage in forests.
 Moreover damage diagnosis is carried out on all woody plants in forests, but also in special crops, like short rotation and Christmas tree plantation, as well as in urban areas.

  • Diagnosis of damages due to vertebrates and abiotic factors, in close collaboration with the Units of Phytophathology, Entomology and Plant Analysis
  • Testing of forest plant protectives for their effects on and tolerance in plants (a statutory task in accordance with the Forest Act). Examination of all plant protectives permitted in Austria
  • Testing and development of alternative pest control practices and equipment, with special emphasis on environment-friendly (biological) methods
  • Elaboration of relevant pest control strategies, in combination with proven measures and new ecological procedures incorporating experiences also from other fields of knowledge
  • Expertise on special tree plantations such as Christmas-tree and brushwood plantations for ornamental purposes
  • Survey of damage by game (game impact monitoring) and elaboration of methods to mitigate or prevent damage by game
