The project DIABOLO tackles Europe\u2019s social, ecological and economic challenge, by providing such a platform of exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increasing competition for forest resources will necessitate new forest-related policies across different sectors. These policies demand relevant, harmonised, comprehensive, reliable and up-to-date information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"281\" height=\"257\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bfw.gv.at\/wp-content\/uploads\/Diabolo_countries.jpg\" alt=\"Countries involved in DIABOLO (in green). The shaded countries contribute as WP Leaders.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a response to this challenge, the DIABOLO project brings together 33 partners from scientific institutions in 25 European countries, including experts in the fields of policy analysis, forest inventory and forest modelling, who have live linkages to European and national policy institutions and stakeholder networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aims<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DIABOLO\u2019s aims are to<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gutenberg__list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>strengthen the methods to produce more accurate, harmonised and timely information derived from forest inventories and monitoring systems, that can be fed into the EU information systems (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.europa.eu\/environment\/archives\/seis\/\">SEIS<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/forest.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/efdac\/\">EFDAC<\/a>)<\/li><li>support the development of EU policies and international processes relying on consistent forest information and<\/li><li>make innovative use of field-collected data and EC space-based applications of Earth observation.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Space data are great sources to monitor changes in land use and disturbances in European forests.&nbsp; Information on growing stock, biomass and carbon estimation will be harmonized using field and remote sensing data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovative approaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Five major innovations can be expected<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"gutenberg__list\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>more effective interface between science and policy<\/li><li>faster impact by sharing methods and techniques for harmonisation between 25 National Forest Inventories (NFIs)<\/li><li>wider scope of NFIs<\/li><li>improved timeliness in forest disturbance monitoring and<\/li><li>better understanding of biomass supply dynamics and trade-offs between land-uses.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consortium and collaboration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Klemens Schadauer, Alexandra Freudenschu\u00df, Thomas Gschwantner and Ambros Berger from BFW are involved in three out of the six work packages.
