Forest Protection
Information &
Procedures
The Unit Forest Protection Information & Procedures studies biology and ecology of forest insects and their damage. It tests and develops integrated management procedures as well as monitoring and surveillance methods for insects but also forest damaging vertebrates and abiotic factors. As part of its forest protection information activities, the unit compiles and analyses data from various sources dealing with forest health. The results are made available online and in print. The Federal Forest Office is supported by the implementation of phytosanitary import inspections.
Priority Areas of Work
- Compilation and analysis of data on forest protection in Austria and presentation of the results
- Documentation of Forest Damaging Factors (DWF)
- Developing and testing monitoring, surveillance and control methods
- Testing of plant protection agents relevant for forestry, information and participating in training programs for practitioners
- Support of the Federal Forest Office with implementation of phytosanitary import inspections, support of the plant protection services with surveillance programs
- Plant protection dogs
- Bark beetle monitoring and information
- Research on biology, ecology and management of forest pests
- Diagnosis of damaging agents on trees, also in special cultures (such as short rotation stands or Christmas tree production) and in urban green
- Publishing the journal Forstschutz Aktuell
