INTERPRAEVENT 2024 in Vienna on natural hazards in a changing climate
From June 10 to 13, the international conference INTERPRAEVENT 2024 will take place at the conference center Hofburg in Vienna.
The key values of the conference are the strengthening of international cooperation and the intensive professional discussion on the latest developments and scientific work on prevention of natural hazards. With its interdisciplinary approach, the conference has connected research and practice since 1967.
Natural hazards in climate change
Global warming and its massive impact on natural disasters is one of the uncomfortable realities of our era. At the same time, human influence on nature and the environment, as a result of unrestrained land use and progressive land consumption has led to an exponential increase in the risk of damage from natural hazards. This global trend is even intensified in fragile mountain regions such as the Alps. Traditional concepts of hazard prevention or disaster management are no longer sufficient in the present and global climate change requires sustainable adaptation processes for the protective system. Natural hazard engineering with its classical instruments of hazard planning also requires systematic further development.
Participants can look forward to the following thematic sessions:
- Climate Change: Drivers, Triggers and Consequences
- Risk Governance, Policies and Resilience
- From Observations and Experiments to Modelling and Simulations
- Hazard and Risk Assessment
- Structural and Non-Structural Mitigation Measures
- Emergency Management and Recovery
Science meets practice
Besides the scientific presentations and the impulse-giving keynote lectures, the conference offers a platform for the exchange of experiences, new research results and innovation. In addition, a poster exhibition and field trips to various topics in natural hazard and risk management in and around Vienna will complete the conference programme. To support young experts, the Student Award was introduced to promote the exchange of ideas with the next generation.
Status quo of the submissions
Over 230 papers and around 19 Student Award contributions from different countries were submitted for the participation at INTERPRAEVENT 2024 in Vienna. Currently, the INTERPRAEVENT committee is reviewing all papers. Most of the received papers came from Austria, Switzerland and Japan. Nevertheless, even contributions from Australia, Canada, and Korea were submitted.
The conference will be held simultaneously in English and German.
