Cultural Heritage. Risks and Securing activities
CHEERS (Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities) is a European project concerning the protection of cultural heritage exposed to environmental risks (natural disasters, climate change, etc.).
The Alps host an outstanding variety of material and immaterial cultural heritage which are the grounds of Alpine people’s identity and strongly contribute to the local economies. Natural disasters, affecting the Alpine territory and likely to be exacerbated by the climate change, represent a major threat to cultural heritage, in terms of asset safety and fruition.
Risk assessment, hazard reduction, and disaster management focus its attention on the protection of human lives and infrastructures, while the safeguard of cultural resources has not been properly addressed yet. The Cheers project focuses on this gap.
The objectives
The project is focused on enhancing the protection of Alpine cultural resources with the BFW being an important partner within this multi-national venture. Especially its know how in natural hazard research, the monitoring and evaluation of risk and safety levels as well as the evaluation of measures to be taken in the field of risk management and risk mitigation are very important within this project.
2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage
European Union proclaimed 2018 to be the European Year of Cultural Heritage. It aims to encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe’s cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space. The slogan for the year is: Our heritage: where the past meets the future.
Therefore CHEERS is also embedded in this European Year of Cultural Heritage, joining together Partners from Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Slovenia und Switzerland with the vision to devise national and transnational tools, governance schemes and intervention guidelines to reduce the vulnerability of Cultural Assets
