Hazards

The Department for Natural Hazards develops practice-oriented methods to safeguard human living environment. The focus is on studies of the formation, development and impact of alpine natural hazards, such as avalanches, mudflows, torrents and landslides. These investigations are an important basis for sustainable protection of the alpine habitat, in particular to ensure that the forest can provide its diverse services to humans and nature even in times of climate change and social change.

Protection Forests in the Alpine Region – Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change - Project MOSAIC

Climate change is undeniably contributing to the increase in weather- and climate-related natural disasters, affecting Alpine communities. Natural disasters are often the result of compound events, which are combinations of multiple climate- and/or weather-related hazards that contribute to societal or environmental risks.
